Thought Replacement
Thought Replacement is a CBT technique used to help us reduce our negative thinking which is often at the center of many people's general everyday anxiety.
Thought Replacement begins with acknowledging that we have good thoughts throughout our days and perhaps examining what they are. In therapy, I may ask what are some good things that you like to think about during the day. It could be anything from looking forward to an up coming social gathering or a vacation. Once we realize that we are stuck ruminating in negative thoughts and chatter, Replacing the thoughts with a predetermined subject or mental activity can help to reduce stop the negative thoughts and then reduce the anxiety.
Thought Replacement is sort of like "Thought Stopping" but instead of just telling yourself to stop thinking about what you are thinking about, you actually have some place to send your mind that is safe and more enjoyable.
